Who is the United Way? The United Way of Moore County is a private non-profit organization with a local board of directors whose mission is to make a measurable impact on the quality of life in the community by addressing our essential human service issues. What does United Way do? United Way is working to advance the common good through a variety of health and human service programs offered in Moore County. We do this by forming partnerships with other local non-profits that serve the priority focus areas. We provide financial support to 22 health and human service agencies and programs serving residents of Moore County, including 2-1-1, a dedicated resource & referral line. What are the issues in the community? The relevant issues in this community are determined by several factors including recent community surveys, historical data, and collaborations with other non-profit agencies. The United Way has categorized priorities for our community into three focus areas: Youth, Families, and Medical & Emergency.

How are community issues addressed by the United Way? United Way of Moore County drives efforts to create lasting changes in the social conditions of the community and to prevent problems from happening. By doing this, we believe that we are creating a stronger and healthier community for everyone who lives here.

Through partnerships United Way supports, we are working to prepare our children for school and to keep our children in school. We work very hard to support and promote economic stability so that people can provide for themselves and their families. Many times people aren’t looking for a handout, they simply need a hand up and someone who will convey to them that all is not lost.

It is also important that we continue to care for the most vulnerable in our community. Those individuals are young and old with many different life stories to tell. The United Way supports programs that provide services to infants and children, those dealing with physical abuse, those battling substance abuse, people who are mentally and physically challenged and the people who care for them, and the elderly and shut-ins in the community.

The United Way also supports groups that provide emergency needs for food, clothing, and medical situations. More than just financial assistance, the programs supported by United Way help people to maintain dignity and independence, and many times, their social and emotional stability.

United Way support is mostly financial, awarding grants yearly to those non-profit agencies that qualify. Additional support is through collaborations with other community groups and non-profits.

The United Way of Moore County kicked off its 2009 fundraising campaign on September 11th and we are encouraging everyone to make a donation of any amount to United Way of Moore County, PO Box 207, Southern Pines, NC 28388.
